Arab is part of our regular Marshall County territory, and between Main Street, the North Brindlee corridor and the Arab City Park area we are here most weeks.
A lot of what we see in Marshall County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

These are the door lock repair faults we are called out to most often in Arab. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- The deadbolt throws but the door still pushes openA strike plate fixed only to the jamb casing rather than into the framing behind it.
- The lock is loose and spins in the doorBacked-out through bolts or an oversized bore that no longer holds the hardware square.
- The lock freezes up in cold weatherMoisture inside the cylinder, common on exterior doors going through a hard freeze.
- The deadbolt only throws if you pull the doorClassic strike misalignment from a door or frame that has shifted.
- The latch does not retract when you turn the handleFailed spindle, broken spring cassette or a seized latch bolt.
- The bolt leaves a bright scrape mark on the strikeDirect evidence of misalignment. The mark shows exactly which way the door has moved.

Elevation means wind. Doors on exposed western walls take a beating that the same door in a sheltered valley subdivision would never see.
Ice building at the threshold lifts and binds a door slightly in its frame, and a deadbolt that was already marginal on alignment will stop throwing entirely until the door is pushed hard, which is what breaks the bolt or the cylinder tailpiece.
Pressure from a storm line pushes a door against its stop and holds the latch bolt under load, and repeatedly forcing a lock in that state wears the latch and the strike far faster than normal use ever would.
Knowing that is the difference between a repair that holds through a Arab summer and one that does not.
Local factors we account for in Arab: ice and sleet and storm wind — typical of the Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain plateau.

- Test the door before the lockWe close the door slowly and watch where the latch meets the strike, because a bolt that scrapes on entry is an alignment problem no new lock will solve.
- Isolate the failureCylinder, latch, linkage or strike. We test each one with the door open so nothing masks anything else. Plateau jobs get seals and lubricants rated for freezing temperatures, since standard products stiffen and stop working when it matters.
- Correct what movedIf the door has dropped or the frame has shifted, that gets fixed first. Filing the strike to fit a moved door just buys a few months.
- Fit hardware that suits the doorWeight, thickness, backset and exposure all matter, and exterior hardware in this part of Alabama needs the right finish to survive.
- Set the throw and the engagementThe bolt should extend fully with the door closed and no hand pressure on it, and the latch should catch without a push.
- Test every key in every lockIncluding the spares. Keys that were cut from copies are a common cause of a lock that feels rough.

Every door lock repair call in Marshall County is a little different, and the cost follows what the door actually needs:
- the grade and finish of the hardware you choose
- commercial hardware requirements like fire ratings and lever functions
- whether it is a standard bored lock or a mortise case
- the number of doors being keyed alike
- whether the lock can be rebuilt or needs full replacement
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Arab.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door lock repair in Arab: questions we get asked
Are the locks on my sliding door worth upgrading?
The factory latch on most patio doors is minimal. Adding a foot bolt or an auxiliary track lock is inexpensive and makes a real difference, and it also takes some strain off a latch that may already be marginal.
Why do my locks work loose every few months?
Either the through bolts are backing out from door movement, or the bore has worn oversized. Both are fixable, but if it keeps happening the door itself is probably moving more than it should.
How do I stop my exterior lock from freezing?
Keep moisture out of the cylinder. In Marshall County the freezes that cause it come with damp air, and a dry lubricant plus a functioning door sweep and drip cap does more good than anything you can put in the keyway after the fact.
A key broke off in my lock. Can it be saved?
Usually. We extract the broken piece and check the cylinder, but the reason keys break is that the lock was already stiff, so we look at what caused that rather than just handing back a new key.
My deadbolt only locks if I lift the door. Is the lock broken?
Probably not. That is the classic sign the door has dropped on its hinges or the frame has shifted, so the bolt is hitting the strike plate instead of entering it. In Arab we see this constantly, and the fix is usually hinge and strike work rather than new hardware.
The lock is fine but the door will not stay shut. What is happening?
The latch is not fully engaging the strike, so the door rests closed but is not actually latched. That is an alignment fix and it is worth doing quickly, because a door in that state offers almost no security.
Broken, stuck, or will not lock?Talk to someone who works on these every day.
