Most of our Bay Minette calls come from Downtown Bay Minette and the courthouse square, though we work the whole Baldwin County side of it and get out to Daphne regularly.
A lot of what we see in Baldwin County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

These are the door handle repair faults we are called out to most often in Bay Minette. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- The exterior handle on the sliding door has snappedCommon on old patio doors where the pull is a thin casting under years of load.
- The finish is pitting or flakingCorrosion, usually from humidity or salt exposure on an exterior door.
- The handle has developed side-to-side playElongated fixing holes, or through-bolts that have been over-tightened into a hollow stile.
- The handle set has left rub marks on the door faceThe rose has loosened and is rotating, which will eventually chew through the finish.
- Rattling when the door is closedLatch and strike clearance has opened up, often after the handle set was replaced with a different backset.
- You have to jiggle the handle for the door to openThe latch is only partly retracting, or the strike is catching it.

Between roughly 65 inches of rain a year, near-constant humidity and a June-to-November hurricane season, coastal doors work harder than doors anywhere else in Alabama.
Salt attacks the plated finish on handle sets first and the springs inside them second, and a handle that has started to pit on the outside usually has a corroded return spring that is about to fail.
Grit works into the space between the handle rose and the door face and into the latch mechanism, and once it is in there the handle feels gritty to turn and the internal spring is wearing every time it moves.
We factor that in on every door handle repair job around the Baldwin County Courthouse and the rest of Bay Minette.
Local factors we account for in Bay Minette: salt air and blowing sand — typical of the Alabama Gulf Coast.

- Work out whether it is the handle or the latchThey feel similar from the outside. Turning the handle with the door open tells us immediately which part has failed.
- Check the door before the hardwareA lever that needs force is often fighting a misaligned strike rather than failing on its own.
- Repair where repair is honestSprings, spindles and roses are replaceable. We say so rather than selling a set when a spindle would do.
- Fit square to the doorBackset, thickness and bore all get checked. A set fitted to an oversized bore will work loose again within weeks.
- Adjust the latch engagementThe door should close and latch with a light push, not a shove. On the coast we also check every fastener on the opening, because salt finds plated screws long before it touches the door itself.
- Check the rest of the setHandles usually fail in groups, so we test the others while we are there rather than leaving you to call again.

Pricing on door handle repair depends on what has actually failed, which is why we talk it through before quoting. These are the things that move the number:
- repair of the existing set versus full replacement
- the grade and finish of the hardware chosen
- how many doors are being done at once
- whether the bore or backset needs correction
- commercial grade requirements on high-use doors
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Bay Minette.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door handle repair in Bay Minette: questions we get asked
My sliding door handle snapped off. Is that a common failure?
Very. The exterior pull on older patio doors is a thin casting that has been carrying the full weight of the panel every time someone drags a stiff door open. If your handle broke, check how hard the door is to move, because that is often the underlying cause.
Can you fix an old mortise handle set on a historic door?
Often yes. Old mortise sets were built to be serviced, and the original hardware is usually better made than any replacement. We would rather rebuild it than gut a door for a modern set.
Do I need to replace the lock to replace the handle?
Not necessarily. On a keyed entry set they are integrated, but on many doors the handle and the deadbolt are separate and you can change one without touching the other.
How long does a handle replacement take?
Most take under an hour per door in Bay Minette. If the bore is worn or the backset does not match, it takes longer because the door itself needs work before the new hardware will sit right.
The handle turns but the door will not open. What is wrong?
The connection between the handle and the latch has broken, usually the spindle or the internal drive. If somebody is stuck behind that door, say so when you call and we will treat it accordingly.
My lever handle droops. Can that be repaired?
Yes, usually. The return spring inside the handle body has failed. On decent hardware we can replace the spring cassette; on thin builder-grade sets it is often cheaper to fit a better handle than to rebuild a weak one.
