We cover Double Springs and the rest of Winston County, from the courthouse square across to the US-278 corridor, and we are out this way often enough that Haleyville and Northport are on the same run.
Between the established parts of Double Springs and the newer subdivisions, we see two different kinds of failure: worn-out frames on one side of town and worn-out hardware on the other.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895The door closer repair problems we see most in Double Springs
These are the door closer repair faults we are called out to most often in Double Springs. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- The door closes at a good speed then slams the last inchLatch speed set too fast, or a worn valve that no longer holds the latch adjustment.
- The door closes fast then stops shortMismatched sweep and latch speed settings.
- The door does not close the last inchClosing force is too low, or the door is binding on the frame in the final approach.
- Mounting screws have pulled the door skin outwardA closer fitted to a hollow door without a reinforcing plate.
- The hold-open function has stopped workingWorn hold-open mechanism in the arm.
- The closer arm is bentThe door has been forced open past its stop, usually by wind or by a cart.

West Alabama collects a lot of rain, and it comes in hard bursts. Doors here fail at the bottom first, where water sits against the sweep and the end grain.
Water running down a door face and into a surface closer body corrodes the internals and the mounting fasteners, and a closer that has been wet repeatedly usually fails at the seal.
Wind is the main killer of door closers: a gust drives the door past its opening limit, bends the arm and often tears the mounting out of the door, which is why an overhead stop is not optional on an exposed door.
It is why the same repair done properly in Double Springs lasts, and the same repair done cheaply does not.
Local factors we account for in Double Springs: heavy rainfall and storm wind — typical of west Alabama.

- Time the closeA door that shuts in under five seconds or fails to latch tells us which valve is at fault before the cover comes off.
- Rule out the door firstA closer struggling against a binding door is not a faulty closer. Hinges and reveal get checked before we condemn the unit.
- Adjust before replacingMany closers we are called to are serviceable and simply out of adjustment. That is a much smaller job and we say so.
- Size the replacement properlyDoor width, weight and exposure decide the power size. An undersized closer will not shut the door; an oversized one shuts out anyone who is not strong.
- Set for people, not just latchingOpening force is checked so the door is usable by everybody, then latch speed is set so it still closes properly.
- Reinforce the mountingOn a hollow door we fit a backing plate rather than driving screws into a skin that will pull out again. Jobs out this way get their fixings checked into framing rather than casing, which is what stops the sag coming back.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of door closer repair in Double Springs
What a door closer repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:
- adjustment versus rebuild versus full replacement
- adding overhead stops or hold-open functions
- whether the mounting has to be repaired or reinforced
- fire rating and accessibility compliance requirements
- the size and weight of the door and its exposure to wind
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Double Springs.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door closer repair in Double Springs: questions we get asked
My door does not close all the way. What is going on?
Either the closing force is too low, or the door is dragging on the frame in the last few inches. In Double Springs we see the second one often, because a frame that has moved makes a good closer look weak.
Can I adjust the closer myself?
The valves are accessible, but they are easy to over-adjust and some closers will lose their spring tension entirely if a valve is backed out too far. If you are not sure which valve does what, it is worth a call first.
My door slams every time. Can that be adjusted?
Almost always. There is a latch speed valve on the closer that controls the last few inches, and it has probably drifted or been set wrong. Adjusting it takes minutes and saves your frame, hinges and hardware from a lot of abuse.
The closer arm on our door is bent. What causes that?
The door was opened past its limit, usually by wind catching it or by someone pushing it hard against a wall. Replacing the arm without adding an overhead stop just means it happens again.
Our fire door is propped open. Is that a problem?
Yes, and it is one of the most common code violations we see. A fire door that cannot close and latch is not doing anything. If it gets propped because it is hard to use, that is the problem to solve.
There is oil dripping from my door closer. Can it be refilled?
No. Closers are sealed units, and once the seal fails the closer is finished. Refilling is not possible on standard units and the unit needs replacing.
