Fairfield is part of our regular Jefferson County territory, and between Downtown Fairfield, the Valley Road corridor and the Miles College area we are here most weeks.
Between the established parts of Fairfield and the newer subdivisions, we see two different kinds of failure: worn-out frames on one side of town and worn-out hardware on the other.

These are the screen door repair faults we are called out to most often in Fairfield. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- The screen track itself is damagedThe channel the screen rides in has been bent or worn.
- The storm door will not stay closedFailed closer or latch on a hinged storm door.
- A retractable screen will not fully retractA fouled or fatigued spring cassette, or debris in the guide channel.
- The storm door closer has torn out of the frameWind caught the door; the mounting needs repair and a wind chain fitted.
- The screen tilts and jams halfway acrossOne roller seized while the other still turns, so the frame is walking out of square.
- It takes real effort to slideSeized rollers or a track full of packed debris.

Birmingham-area red clay expands when it is wet and contracts hard when it dries out. That movement travels straight up into slabs and foundations, and door frames are usually the first place a homeowner notices it.
Grit accumulating in the screen track is the reason most screens get hard to move, and it wears the small plastic rollers far faster than the weight of the panel ever would.
Humidity corrodes the steel components in screen rollers and rusts the tiny springs in adjusters, so screens seize up and drop out of their track.
It is why the same repair done properly in Fairfield lasts, and the same repair done cheaply does not.
Local factors we account for in Fairfield: grit and dust and sustained humidity — typical of the Birmingham metro.

- Work out whether it is the screen or the trackA screen that jams is often a track problem. Replacing rollers in a damaged track fixes nothing.
- Check the frame for squareA racked frame will never slide properly. Corner keys get reset before anything else is considered.
- Choose mesh for the jobStandard, pet-resistant, solar or fine insect mesh. The right one depends on the door, the exposure and what tore the last one.
- Rescreen with correct tensionToo tight and the frame bows, too loose and it billows. Even tension is what keeps a screen flat and quiet.
- Fit and adjust the rollersBoth rollers set so the frame runs level and the latch meets its keeper without lifting. Metro-area openings often sit on clay that moves seasonally, so we check the frame for square before touching the hardware.
- Check it stays in the trackA screen that can be lifted out is one gust from being on the patio, so the height and the guides get set properly.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of screen door repair in Fairfield
Pricing on screen door repair depends on what has actually failed, which is why we talk it through before quoting. These are the things that move the number:
- custom-built replacement panels where the original is not repairable
- the mesh type chosen, from standard fiberglass to pet-resistant and solar
- rescreening versus repairing or replacing the frame
- the size of the panel
- roller and track work in addition to the screen itself
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Fairfield.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Screen door repair in Fairfield: questions we get asked
Will a solar screen make my room cooler?
It helps noticeably on a sunny exposure. Solar mesh blocks a good portion of the heat before it reaches the glass, which matters on west-facing doors during Fairfield summers.
How long does a rescreen take?
Usually under an hour per panel in Fairfield. If the frame needs straightening or corner keys replaced, allow a bit longer.
My screen mesh has gone brittle and crumbles. What happened?
UV exposure. Screens on the south and west sides of a house in Fairfield take a lot of sun, and standard fiberglass mesh eventually degrades. Solar mesh lasts longer and cuts heat at the same time.
Can you make a screen that keeps out the tiny biting insects?
Yes, fine no-see-um mesh. It has a much tighter weave, and in the parts of Jefferson County near water it is the only thing that actually works against the smallest biters.
Is it worth rescreening or should I just buy a new screen door?
Rescreening is far cheaper and the frame is usually fine. New panels only make sense when the frame is bent beyond straightening or the corners are gone.
What mesh should I use if I have dogs?
Pet-resistant mesh, which is a heavier vinyl-coated polyester, and often a pet grille across the lower section. Standard fiberglass will not survive a dog that pushes against it.
