Most of our Guin calls come from Main Street and the US-43 corridor, though we work the whole Marion County side of it and get out to Hamilton regularly.
Guin has enough older housing stock that repair almost always beats replacement here, and enough new construction that we spend a lot of time on hardware that failed early.
Not sure whether it is a repair or a replacement?Describe the symptoms and we will give you a straight answer.

These are the exterior door repair faults we are called out to most often in Guin. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Soft wood at the bottom of the door or jambRot from standing water; the sooner it is caught the smaller the repair.
- Daylight visible around the closed doorFailed weatherstrip, a dropped door, or a frame out of square.
- The door has to be shouldered to latchThe door has dropped, or the frame has moved and the strike no longer lines up.
- There is a tide line across the bottom of the doorStanding water at the threshold, which means drainage rather than the door is the real fault.
- The door is tight in the morning and loose by eveningA door absorbing moisture overnight and drying through the day, which points to an unsealed edge.
- The door bottom drags on the thresholdHinge sag or a threshold adjusted too high.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Why exterior door repair fails in west Alabama
Humidity stays high from late spring through September, which is exactly when wood doors that fit fine in winter start dragging on the jamb.
Long humid periods swell wood entry doors, and a swollen door binds against the frame and puts load through hinges, latch and lock every time it is used.
Water reaching a threshold with no sill pan under it goes into the framing and the subfloor, and by the time it shows as a soft jamb the damage underneath is usually well advanced.
It is why the same repair done properly in Guin lasts, and the same repair done cheaply does not.
Local factors we account for in Guin: sustained humidity and heavy rainfall — typical of west Alabama.

- Check it in the closed position firstAn exterior door only has to work in one position. We look at how it sits shut before we look at how it swings.
- Find where the water goesMost exterior door failures are water failures. We look at the threshold, the sill pan, the drip cap and the ground level outside. Jobs out this way get their fixings checked into framing rather than casing, which is what stops the sag coming back.
- Correct the geometry before the sealsWeatherstrip cannot fix an inconsistent gap. The door has to be sitting right before sealing it means anything.
- Fit for the exposureStainless fixings, marine-grade or coated hardware and the correct sweep, depending on how much weather the opening takes.
- Make the lock work without forceThe deadbolt should throw fully with the door simply closed. If you are leaning on it, the geometry is still wrong.
- Water-test itA hose on the closed door tells you more than any inspection, and it is how we confirm the leak is actually gone.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of exterior door repair in Guin
What a exterior door repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:
- sidelight and transom glass replacement
- security reinforcement and hardware upgrades
- whether the frame has rot that needs splicing
- weatherstrip and threshold work versus structural repair
- whether water management details also need correcting
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Guin.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Exterior door repair in Guin: questions we get asked
How long does exterior door repair take?
Weatherstrip, threshold and alignment work is usually a few hours. Rot repair and frame work takes longer, and we will tell you which one you are looking at before we start.
Why does my front door stick in summer and not in winter?
Seasonal movement in the door and the frame. In Guin's humid months a wood door takes on moisture and grows slightly, and a door that already had tight clearance starts binding.
Is my front door secure enough?
The weak point on most entry doors is not the lock, it is the strike. A deadbolt in a strike plate held by short screws into thin jamb material offers much less than people assume. Reinforcing it is inexpensive.
My sidelight glass has fogged up. Can that be replaced separately?
Yes. Sidelights and transoms use insulated glass units that can be replaced on their own, without touching the door.
I can see daylight around my front door. Is that just weatherstrip?
Sometimes, but check whether the gap is even. A consistent gap all the way around is a weatherstrip job. A gap that is wide at one corner and tight at another means the door or frame has moved, and new weatherstrip will not close it.
How much does a leaky front door actually cost me?
More than people expect. A gap you can see daylight through around a Guin entry door moves conditioned air continuously, and in the summer it is running against your air conditioning all day.
