Door Closer Repair in Oxford, AL

A door closer has one job and two failure modes: it lets the door slam, or it does not shut the door at all. Both are worth fixing quickly, because a door that does not close properly is not secure and, on a fire door, is not...

Door Closer Repair — Oxford, Alabama

Most of our Oxford calls come from Downtown Oxford and Choccolocco Road, though we work the whole Calhoun County side of it and get out to Jacksonville regularly.

A lot of what we see in Calhoun County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

How conditions in Oxford affect door closer repair

The foothills get real cold snaps and real heat, and the ground moves with them. Rocky, uneven fill under older slabs means door frames rarely stay perfectly square for a decade.

When a frame moves with the ground under it, the door binds somewhere in its swing, and people compensate by cranking the closer tighter, which is why so many doors are simultaneously hard to open and still not latching.

Water running down a door face and into a surface closer body corrodes the internals and the mounting fasteners, and a closer that has been wet repeatedly usually fails at the seal.

It is why the same repair done properly in Oxford lasts, and the same repair done cheaply does not.

Local factors we account for in Oxford: soil movement and heavy rainfall — typical of the Appalachian foothills.

Our door closer repair process

  1. Time the closeA door that shuts in under five seconds or fails to latch tells us which valve is at fault before the cover comes off.
  2. Rule out the door firstA closer struggling against a binding door is not a faulty closer. Hinges and reveal get checked before we condemn the unit.
  3. Adjust before replacingMany closers we are called to are serviceable and simply out of adjustment. That is a much smaller job and we say so. Foothill jobs get assessed for wind loading, because doors here take gusts that flatten seals unevenly.
  4. Match to the opening's dutyA fire door, an accessible entrance and an internal office door have different requirements, and the specification follows the door.
  5. Set for people, not just for latchingThe door needs to close and latch every time and still be openable by someone with limited strength.
  6. Fit a stop if it needs oneA closer with no backcheck and no stop will eventually put the handle through the wall and tear its own fixings out.

What affects the cost of door closer repair in Oxford

There is no single price for door closer repair in Oxford, because two doors with identical symptoms can need very different work. Here is what makes the difference:

  • adding overhead stops or hold-open functions
  • surface, concealed or floor mounted closer type
  • the size and weight of the door and its exposure to wind
  • whether the mounting has to be repaired or reinforced
  • adjustment versus rebuild versus full replacement

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Oxford.

Door closer repair in Oxford: questions we get asked

Do you work on floor closers?

Yes. Floor closers under heavy entrance doors are serviceable, though they are more involved to work on because the unit sits in the floor.

The closer arm on our door is bent. What causes that?

The door was opened past its limit, usually by wind catching it or by someone pushing it hard against a wall. Replacing the arm without adding an overhead stop just means it happens again.

Why is our door so heavy to open now?

Somebody has probably turned the closer up to force a door that was not latching. That is treating a symptom, and it makes the door difficult for customers and staff. Fix the latching problem and the closer can come back to a reasonable setting.

Do door closers need different settings in summer and winter?

They can. The hydraulic fluid thins in heat and thickens in cold, so a closer set perfectly in Oxford in August may close too slowly in January. Quality closers hold their setting better across the temperature swing.

What size closer do I need?

It depends on the door width, weight and exposure. Exterior doors in Calhoun County also need to handle wind, and an undersized closer on a windy exposure gets destroyed.

My door slams every time. Can that be adjusted?

Almost always. There is a latch speed valve on the closer that controls the last few inches, and it has probably drifted or been set wrong. Adjusting it takes minutes and saves your frame, hinges and hardware from a lot of abuse.

One call gets you an answer. We will tell you what is wrong and what it takes to fix.
