Steele is part of our regular St. Clair County territory, and between the US-11 corridor, Main Street and the Chandler Mountain area we are here most weeks.
Steele has enough older housing stock that repair almost always beats replacement here, and enough new construction that we spend a lot of time on hardware that failed early.

These are the door lock repair faults we are called out to most often in Steele. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- The lock freezes up in cold weatherMoisture inside the cylinder, common on exterior doors going through a hard freeze.
- The smart lock keeps jamming or reporting failureMotorized deadbolts are far less tolerant of strike misalignment than manual ones.
- The keyed sliding door handle will not lockThe panel has dropped and the hook latch no longer reaches the keeper.
- Two locks on the same door need different keysMismatched cylinders from a previous partial replacement, easily re-keyed to one key.
- Corrosion visible around the cylinder faceSalt or moisture attacking the internals, which will seize the lock if it is not addressed.
- The key turns but nothing movesBroken tailpiece or a failed cam inside the cylinder.

Storms coming off the ridges dump a lot of water in a short time, and any door with a compromised threshold pan will show it on the floor inside.
Pressure from a storm line pushes a door against its stop and holds the latch bolt under load, and repeatedly forcing a lock in that state wears the latch and the strike far faster than normal use ever would.
When the ground under a house moves, the strike side of the frame moves with it, and a deadbolt that has to be lifted or shouldered into place is nearly always reporting foundation movement rather than a failing lock.
None of it is a reason to replace a door. It is a reason to use the right parts and set the door up correctly in the first place.
Local factors we account for in Steele: storm wind and soil movement — typical of the Appalachian foothills.

- Test the door before the lockWe close the door slowly and watch where the latch meets the strike, because a bolt that scrapes on entry is an alignment problem no new lock will solve.
- Isolate the failureCylinder, latch, linkage or strike. We test each one with the door open so nothing masks anything else.
- Fix the cause, not the symptomIf the frame has moved, we correct the strike or the hinge side rather than shimming a lock into a bad opening.
- Fit hardware that suits the doorWeight, thickness, backset and exposure all matter, and exterior hardware in this part of Alabama needs the right finish to survive.
- Set and adjustThe bolt should throw completely with the door closed and no pressure applied by hand. Foothill jobs get assessed for wind loading, because doors here take gusts that flatten seals unevenly.
- Hand over the keys and check every oneWe test each key in each lock before leaving.

Every door lock repair call in St. Clair County is a little different, and the cost follows what the door actually needs:
- the grade and finish of the hardware you choose
- the number of doors being keyed alike
- whether it is a standard bored lock or a mortise case
- whether the frame or strike also needs correction
- whether the lock can be rebuilt or needs full replacement
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Steele.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door lock repair in Steele: questions we get asked
Are the locks on my sliding door worth upgrading?
The factory latch on most patio doors is minimal. Adding a foot bolt or an auxiliary track lock is inexpensive and makes a real difference, and it also takes some strain off a latch that may already be marginal.
Can you make all my doors use one key?
Yes. Keying alike is straightforward as long as the cylinders are compatible, and for most Steele homes with a front door, back door and garage entry it makes daily life a lot simpler.
Do you install smart locks?
Yes, and more importantly we fix the door so they work. Motorized deadbolts have far less torque than your wrist does, so a strike that a manual bolt could force is exactly what makes a smart lock report a jam every other day.
My deadbolt only locks if I lift the door. Is the lock broken?
Probably not. That is the classic sign the door has dropped on its hinges or the frame has shifted, so the bolt is hitting the strike plate instead of entering it. In Steele we see this constantly, and the fix is usually hinge and strike work rather than new hardware.
Can you rekey my locks instead of replacing them?
Yes, as long as the cylinders are in serviceable condition. Rekeying keeps the hardware you already have, makes every old key useless, and costs far less than new locksets on every door.
A key broke off in my lock. Can it be saved?
Usually. We extract the broken piece and check the cylinder, but the reason keys break is that the lock was already stiff, so we look at what caused that rather than just handing back a new key.
