Door Lock Repair — Harvest, Alabama

Whether you are near Monrovia, over in Wall Triana Highway, or on the Capshaw side of Harvest, it is the same coverage and the same crew.

Harvest has enough older housing stock that repair almost always beats replacement here, and enough new construction that we spend a lot of time on hardware that failed early.

What Harvest customers call us about

These are the door lock repair faults we are called out to most often in Harvest. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

  • The key turns but nothing movesBroken tailpiece or a failed cam inside the cylinder.
  • The lock is loose and spins in the doorBacked-out through bolts or an oversized bore that no longer holds the hardware square.
  • The keyed sliding door handle will not lockThe panel has dropped and the hook latch no longer reaches the keeper.
  • The smart lock keeps jamming or reporting failureMotorized deadbolts are far less tolerant of strike misalignment than manual ones.
  • The lock freezes up in cold weatherMoisture inside the cylinder, common on exterior doors going through a hard freeze.
  • Corrosion visible around the cylinder faceSalt or moisture attacking the internals, which will seize the lock if it is not addressed.

Most doors we see are repairable.Call and find out before you price a replacement.

Harvest conditions and door lock repair

River humidity off the Tennessee keeps interior air damp well into October, then the first hard freeze arrives and every seal, sweep and gasket in the house gets tested overnight.

Pressure from a storm line pushes a door against its stop and holds the latch bolt under load, and repeatedly forcing a lock in that state wears the latch and the strike far faster than normal use ever would.

Continuous humidity swells a wood door in its frame, and a swollen door puts the deadbolt slightly out of line with its strike, so the lock takes side load every time it is thrown and eventually the mechanism gives up.

None of it is a reason to replace a door. It is a reason to use the right parts and set the door up correctly in the first place.

Local factors we account for in Harvest: storm wind and sustained humidity — typical of the Tennessee Valley.

What happens when we get there

  1. Watch the bolt meet the strikeWe close the door slowly and see where the bolt lands. Most lock complaints are alignment complaints.
  2. Diagnose the failure pointCylinder, latch mechanism, linkage or strike. Each one feels different under the key, and each one has a different fix.
  3. Fix the cause, not the symptomIf the frame has moved, we correct the strike or the hinge side rather than shimming a lock into a bad opening.
  4. Fit hardware that suits the doorWeight, thickness, backset and exposure all matter, and exterior hardware in this part of Alabama needs the right finish to survive.
  5. Set and adjustThe bolt should throw completely with the door closed and no pressure applied by hand.
  6. Hand over the keys and check every oneWe test each key in each lock before leaving. We look at how the opening behaves wet and dry, since the fault often only appears in one half of the year.

What affects the cost of door lock repair in Harvest

What a door lock repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:

  • whether it is a standard bored lock or a mortise case
  • whether the frame or strike also needs correction
  • commercial hardware requirements like fire ratings and lever functions
  • whether the lock can be rebuilt or needs full replacement
  • the number of doors being keyed alike

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Harvest.

Door lock repair in Harvest: questions we get asked

Can you get me back in if I am locked out?

Call and tell us the situation. What matters is what kind of lock it is and whether the door is damaged, and we will tell you honestly what the options are.

Are the locks on my sliding door worth upgrading?

The factory latch on most patio doors is minimal. Adding a foot bolt or an auxiliary track lock is inexpensive and makes a real difference, and it also takes some strain off a latch that may already be marginal.

My deadbolt only locks if I lift the door. Is the lock broken?

Probably not. That is the classic sign the door has dropped on its hinges or the frame has shifted, so the bolt is hitting the strike plate instead of entering it. In Harvest we see this constantly, and the fix is usually hinge and strike work rather than new hardware.

Do you install smart locks?

Yes, and more importantly we fix the door so they work. Motorized deadbolts have far less torque than your wrist does, so a strike that a manual bolt could force is exactly what makes a smart lock report a jam every other day.

Why do my locks work loose every few months?

Either the through bolts are backing out from door movement, or the bore has worn oversized. Both are fixable, but if it keeps happening the door itself is probably moving more than it should.

How do I stop my exterior lock from freezing?

Keep moisture out of the cylinder. In Madison County the freezes that cause it come with damp air, and a dry lubricant plus a functioning door sweep and drip cap does more good than anything you can put in the keyway after the fact.
