Door Lock Repair — Orange Beach, Alabama

Our Orange Beach customers are spread from Perdido Beach Boulevard to Ono Island side and out around the Wharf and its Ferris wheel, and we serve the surrounding Baldwin County communities on the same schedule.

A lot of what we see in Baldwin County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

The door lock repair problems we see most in Orange Beach

These are the door lock repair faults we are called out to most often in Orange Beach. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

  • The knob turns but the door stays shutBroken internal linkage between the knob and the latch.
  • The key only works if you lift or lean on the doorThe bolt is binding in the strike because the door is sitting low in the opening.
  • The lock is loose and spins in the doorBacked-out through bolts or an oversized bore that no longer holds the hardware square.
  • The key turns but nothing movesBroken tailpiece or a failed cam inside the cylinder.
  • There is a gritty crunch when the key turnsAbrasive debris drawn into the keyway, which grinds the pins and shortens cylinder life.
  • The smart lock keeps jamming or reporting failureMotorized deadbolts are far less tolerant of strike misalignment than manual ones.

Why door lock repair fails in the Alabama Gulf Coast

Between roughly 65 inches of rain a year, near-constant humidity and a June-to-November hurricane season, coastal doors work harder than doors anywhere else in Alabama.

Continuous humidity swells a wood door in its frame, and a swollen door puts the deadbolt slightly out of line with its strike, so the lock takes side load every time it is thrown and eventually the mechanism gives up.

Salt gets into a lock cylinder through the keyway and corrodes the pins and springs, and the first sign is a key that needs a little wiggle, followed a few months later by a key that will not turn at all.

None of it is a reason to replace a door. It is a reason to use the right parts and set the door up correctly in the first place.

Local factors we account for in Orange Beach: sustained humidity and salt air — typical of the Alabama Gulf Coast.

Most doors we see are repairable.Call and find out before you price a replacement.

Our door lock repair process

  1. Test the door before the lockWe close the door slowly and watch where the latch meets the strike, because a bolt that scrapes on entry is an alignment problem no new lock will solve.
  2. Isolate the failureCylinder, latch, linkage or strike. We test each one with the door open so nothing masks anything else.
  3. Correct what movedIf the door has dropped or the frame has shifted, that gets fixed first. Filing the strike to fit a moved door just buys a few months.
  4. Fit hardware that suits the doorWeight, thickness, backset and exposure all matter, and exterior hardware in this part of Alabama needs the right finish to survive.
  5. Adjust until it works one-handedIf you need a second hand on the door to turn the key, it is not finished, whatever the parts list says.
  6. Hand over the keys and check every oneWe test each key in each lock before leaving. Coastal jobs get stainless or coated fixings as standard, since anything else here is a return visit waiting to happen.

One call gets you an answer. We will tell you what is wrong and what it takes to fix.

What affects the cost of door lock repair in Orange Beach

Pricing on door lock repair depends on what has actually failed, which is why we talk it through before quoting. These are the things that move the number:

  • the grade and finish of the hardware you choose
  • whether the lock can be rebuilt or needs full replacement
  • commercial hardware requirements like fire ratings and lever functions
  • whether it is a standard bored lock or a mortise case
  • whether the frame or strike also needs correction

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Orange Beach.

Door lock repair in Orange Beach: questions we get asked

How do I stop my exterior lock from freezing?

Keep moisture out of the cylinder. In Baldwin County the freezes that cause it come with damp air, and a dry lubricant plus a functioning door sweep and drip cap does more good than anything you can put in the keyway after the fact.

Should I use a single or double cylinder deadbolt?

A double cylinder needs a key on both sides, which stops someone reaching through broken glass but also slows down anyone trying to get out in an emergency. For most Orange Beach homes with glass near the door, we would rather reinforce the glass and the frame and keep a single cylinder inside.

The lock is fine but the door will not stay shut. What is happening?

The latch is not fully engaging the strike, so the door rests closed but is not actually latched. That is an alignment fix and it is worth doing quickly, because a door in that state offers almost no security.

Why do my locks work loose every few months?

Either the through bolts are backing out from door movement, or the bore has worn oversized. Both are fixable, but if it keeps happening the door itself is probably moving more than it should.

Do you work on commercial locks and exit devices?

Yes. Storefront mortise cylinders, lever sets, panic bars and keyed-alike systems for Orange Beach businesses are a regular part of the work.

Do you install smart locks?

Yes, and more importantly we fix the door so they work. Motorized deadbolts have far less torque than your wrist does, so a strike that a manual bolt could force is exactly what makes a smart lock report a jam every other day.

Not sure whether it is a repair or a replacement?Describe the symptoms and we will give you a straight answer.
