Our territory takes in Riverside and the communities around it in St. Clair County, so calls from the US-78 corridor, Depot Street and out by Logan Martin Lake all get the same response.
A lot of what we see in St. Clair County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

- A hinge leaf has bowed away from flatAn undersized hinge for the door weight, common where a solid door replaced a hollow one.
- Commercial door binding against the frameWorn hinges or failed bearings on a heavy door with a closer.

The foothills get real cold snaps and real heat, and the ground moves with them. Rocky, uneven fill under older slabs means door frames rarely stay perfectly square for a decade.
A gust catching an open door and slamming it against its stop puts an enormous shock load through the top hinge, and that single event is often what starts a sag that develops over the following months.
Foundation movement changes the geometry of the opening, and the hinges are what absorb it, so a door that suddenly starts dragging usually has hinge screws that have been slowly pulling out under that load.
None of it is a reason to replace a door. It is a reason to use the right parts and set the door up correctly in the first place.
Local factors we account for in Riverside: storm wind and soil movement — typical of the Appalachian foothills.

- Find the hinge that actually failedThe door drags at the latch, but the fault is almost always at the top hinge. We check each one under load.
- Check what the screws are holding ontoShort screws into casing rather than framing are the most common cause of sag we see, and no hinge fixes that.
- Rebuild the anchorageWhere the screws no longer bite, we fill and re-drill so the fixings reach solid material, then fit long screws into framing. Foothill jobs get assessed for wind loading, because doors here take gusts that flatten seals unevenly.
- Size the hinge to the doorA solid or fire-rated door needs hinges rated for its weight. Three light hinges on a heavy slab will always sag again.
- Re-hang and check the revealAn even gap top to bottom, latch side and hinge side, before we go anywhere near the lock.
- Confirm the latch and lock still line upMoving a door on its hinges changes where the latch lands, so the strike gets checked too.

Every door hinge repair call in St. Clair County is a little different, and the cost follows what the door actually needs:

- standard hinges versus ball bearing or continuous hinges
- the weight and size of the door
- finish and security hardware selections
- whether the door also needs re-hanging or the strike relocated

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door hinge repair in Riverside: questions we get asked
Are the hinges on my sliding door serviceable?
Sliding doors do not use hinges, but French and swinging patio doors do, and they are heavy. Those hinges take a lot of load and are worth checking if the door has started dragging.
My door swings open by itself. Can that be fixed?
Yes. That means the hinge line is out of plumb, so the door is rolling downhill. Re-hanging it plumb fixes it, and in Riverside it often turns up in houses where the frame has moved.
Will fixing the hinges fix my latching problem?
Frequently. A door that has dropped on its hinges puts the latch below the strike. Bringing the door back to position often means the lock works again with no other work.
How do I know which hinge is the problem?
Look at the gap between the door and the frame down the latch side. If it is tight at the top and wide at the bottom, the top hinge has pulled. That is the one carrying the most load and it fails first.
Why do my hinge screws keep coming loose?
Because they are only holding into jamb material, which is often less than an inch of soft wood. Long screws driven into the structural framing behind the jamb solve it permanently.
What makes hinges squeal?
Dry or worn pins, and sometimes grit in the knuckles. In Riverside the doors that squeal first are usually exterior doors, because moisture strips the lubricant and starts surface corrosion inside the knuckle.
