Sliding Door Repair — Samson, Alabama

We know Samson well: the older housing around Main Street, the newer construction toward the AL-52 corridor, and everything out past the Samson city park.

A lot of what we see in Geneva County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

What Samson customers call us about

These are the sliding door repair faults we are called out to most often in Samson. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

  • The screen door falls out constantlyWorn screen rollers and a bent top or bottom rail on the screen frame.
  • Water on the floor after heavy rainBlocked weep holes in the sill, so the track fills and backs up over the interior lip.
  • The door will not latch anymoreThe panel has settled out of square, so the hook or mortise latch no longer lines up with the keeper.
  • You can lift the panel visibly in its openingExcess head clearance from a sagging header, which is what lets it jump the track.
  • It jumps off the trackThe panel has dropped low enough that it is no longer captured by the head channel, or the roller adjustment screws have backed out.
  • A loud grinding or scraping noiseMetal-on-metal contact where the roller housing has broken through and is riding on the bare track.

What we see on sliding door repair around Geneva County

Sandy soil here drains fast but also shifts, and blowing sand is a constant presence in sliding door tracks and screen channels.

Sliding door sills are designed to collect water and drain it back outside through weep holes, and after a heavy rain those weeps are exactly where debris ends up, so the track fills, the water backs over the interior lip, and the roller assemblies sit in standing water.

Storm wind pushes hard on the large flat surface of a patio slider and drives the panel against the interlock, which loosens roller adjustment over time and works the panel out of alignment with its latch keeper.

None of it is a reason to replace a door. It is a reason to use the right parts and set the door up correctly in the first place.

Local factors we account for in Samson: heavy rainfall and storm wind — typical of the Wiregrass.

How we approach sliding door repair

  1. Look at the whole opening, not just the doorWe check the panel, the track, the head channel and the frame for square before touching a screwdriver, because a door that is fighting the frame will eat a new set of rollers in a year.
  2. Get the glass out of the way safelyA patio panel is heavy and awkward. We take it out properly so the track and the roller housings can actually be seen.
  3. Match rollers to the door, not the cataloguePanel weight, housing type and track profile all decide the roller. Fitting whatever is on the van is why doors come back.
  4. Bring the running surface backA pitted or peened track will destroy new rollers in a season, so it gets dressed, capped or replaced before anything goes back in. Sandy-soil jobs get their running surfaces cleaned out thoroughly, because new rollers fitted into a gritty track will not last a year.
  5. Level the panel, then set the heightBoth adjusters are wound together so the panel sits level and the interlock engages along its whole length, not just at the top.
  6. Hand it back working the way you use itWe open and close it the way you would, one-handed, and check the lock, the screen and the drainage before we leave.

What affects the cost of sliding door repair in Samson

Pricing on sliding door repair depends on what has actually failed, which is why we talk it through before quoting. These are the things that move the number:

  • the size and weight of the panel, since heavy insulated glass units need heavier assemblies
  • the age of the door and whether replacement hardware is still made for it
  • whether the frame has moved and needs shimming or refastening
  • how much damage the worn track has taken before the call
  • whether the fix is rollers only or rollers plus track repair

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Samson.

Sliding door repair in Samson: questions we get asked

Will new rollers fix a door that scrapes loudly?

Only if the track is still in good condition. Once a roller has broken through and the housing has been riding on bare aluminum, the track has a groove worn in it, and new rollers dropped onto that groove will fail quickly. That is when we cap the track.

Do you repair the older aluminum sliding doors?

Yes, and there are a lot of them in Samson. Aluminum frames from the sixties through the eighties are actually good candidates for repair because the frame material has not degraded; it is the rollers, the track surface and the weatherstrip that have worn out.

Can a sliding door that has stopped rolling be fixed, or does it need replacing?

Almost always fixed. The frame and glass are usually fine and it is the two small roller assemblies underneath that have failed. Replacing a whole patio door in Samson is a several thousand dollar job; rebuilding the rollers and track is a fraction of that and gets you a door that rolls better than it has in years.

How long does a sliding door repair take?

Most single roller-and-track jobs in Samson take one to two hours. Multi-panel doors, doors with damaged tracks that need capping, or units that also need glass work take longer, and we tell you which category yours falls into before we start.

Do you replace the glass in sliding doors too?

Yes. Fogged units where the insulated seal has failed, cracked panes and full tempered glass replacement are all part of what we do, and we can usually keep the existing frame.

Is there anything I can do to make my sliding door last longer?

Vacuum the track rather than sweeping it, keep silicone rather than oil-based lubricant on the running surface, and check that the weep holes at the bottom of the sill are open. Oil-based products in Samson collect dust and grit and turn into grinding paste.
