Sliding Door Repair in Woodstock, AL

The three things that go wrong on a sliding glass door are rollers, track and alignment, and they are connected. A worn roller lets the panel drop, the dropped panel grinds the track, and the chewed-up track destroys the next set...

Sliding Door Repair — Woodstock, Alabama

Our territory takes in Woodstock and the communities around it in Bibb County, so calls from the I-20/59 exit 97 corridor, the Cahaba River and out by the Cahaba River all get the same response.

A lot of what we see in Bibb County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

When to call about sliding door repair

These are the sliding door repair faults we are called out to most often in Woodstock. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

  • The door bounces or chatters as it movesFlat spots worn onto nylon roller wheels that have been running on grit.
  • It slides fine one way and binds the otherOne roller of the tandem pair has collapsed, so the panel is running out of level.
  • The interlock at the meeting stile has separatedThe panel has dropped far enough that the stiles no longer engage each other.
  • The track has a raised lip you can catch a fingernail onAluminium track peened over by a panel that has been running on bare wheel housings.
  • Cold air pouring in around the edgesCollapsed weatherstrip and worn pile seals, and often a gap the panel misalignment created.

How conditions in Woodstock affect sliding door repair

West Alabama collects a lot of rain, and it comes in hard bursts. Doors here fail at the bottom first, where water sits against the sweep and the end grain.

Sliding door sills are designed to collect water and drain it back outside through weep holes, and after a heavy rain those weeps are exactly where debris ends up, so the track fills, the water backs over the interior lip, and the roller assemblies sit in standing water.

Long humid stretches keep condensation on the cold aluminum frame of a slider almost continuously, and that moisture rusts roller axles and adjustment screws from the inside, which is why the screws often shear when someone finally tries to adjust the door.

We factor that in on every sliding door repair job around the Cahaba River and the rest of Woodstock.

Local factors we account for in Woodstock: heavy rainfall and sustained humidity — typical of west Alabama.

How we approach sliding door repair

  1. Watch it move before touching anythingWe run the door end to end and listen. Where the noise starts and where the effort peaks tells us which roller has gone.
  2. Get the glass out of the way safelyA patio panel is heavy and awkward. We take it out properly so the track and the roller housings can actually be seen.
  3. Match rollers to the door, not the cataloguePanel weight, housing type and track profile all decide the roller. Fitting whatever is on the van is why doors come back.
  4. Bring the running surface backA pitted or peened track will destroy new rollers in a season, so it gets dressed, capped or replaced before anything goes back in.
  5. Level the panel, then set the heightBoth adjusters are wound together so the panel sits level and the interlock engages along its whole length, not just at the top. Across west Alabama we check the frame anchorage carefully, because seasonal soil movement works fixings loose over time.
  6. Hand it back working the way you use itWe open and close it the way you would, one-handed, and check the lock, the screen and the drainage before we leave.

What affects the cost of sliding door repair in Woodstock

Pricing on sliding door repair depends on what has actually failed, which is why we talk it through before quoting. These are the things that move the number:

  • whether the frame has moved and needs shimming or refastening
  • the age of the door and whether replacement hardware is still made for it
  • how many panels the system has, since three and four panel doors take longer to set
  • whether the fix is rollers only or rollers plus track repair
  • the size and weight of the panel, since heavy insulated glass units need heavier assemblies

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Woodstock.

Sliding door repair in Woodstock: questions we get asked

My door came off the track. Did I break something?

Usually not. A panel comes out of the track when it has dropped low enough that the head channel no longer holds it, which means the rollers were already worn or the adjustment screws backed out. Putting it back without correcting the height means it will happen again.

Will new rollers fix a door that scrapes loudly?

Only if the track is still in good condition. Once a roller has broken through and the housing has been riding on bare aluminum, the track has a groove worn in it, and new rollers dropped onto that groove will fail quickly. That is when we cap the track.

Can you fix the lock without fixing the door?

Sometimes, but if the door has settled, a new lock will not line up with the keeper any better than the old one did. We check the panel alignment first, because a lock that will not catch is often a symptom rather than the actual problem.

Do you repair the older aluminum sliding doors?

Yes, and there are a lot of them in Woodstock. Aluminum frames from the sixties through the eighties are actually good candidates for repair because the frame material has not degraded; it is the rollers, the track surface and the weatherstrip that have worn out.

Do you work on the big multi-panel and stacking patio doors?

Yes. Those systems put a lot of weight on each roller and they are less forgiving of a frame that is even slightly out of square, so alignment work matters more on them than on a standard two-panel door.

Why does my sliding door work fine in winter and stick in summer?

That is a moisture and expansion problem, and it is common across Bibb County. Humid months swell wood and vinyl components and expand the frame slightly, which is enough to close up clearance that was already marginal because of worn rollers.

One call gets you an answer. We will tell you what is wrong and what it takes to fix.
