Between Emerald Mountain proper, the the Emerald Mountain Expressway area and the newer building out toward Redland Road, we stay busy in Elmore County, and Millbrook is close enough that we are often nearby.
A lot of what we see in Elmore County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.
Most doors we see are repairable.Call and find out before you price a replacement.

- The handle set turns but nothing engagesBroken multipoint gearbox or a failed drive.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Why french door repair fails in the River Region
Remnants of Gulf systems still carry serious rain this far inland, and doors on the south and west sides of a house take the brunt of it.
Humidity swells both leaves toward each other, and since the meeting stile is where the two doors already have the tightest clearance, that is where a French door pair binds first every summer.
Storm wind on a pair of French doors loads the meeting stile and the flush bolts, and if the inactive leaf is not solidly bolted top and bottom, the wind will find that out for you.
None of it is a reason to replace a door. It is a reason to use the right parts and set the door up correctly in the first place.
Local factors we account for in Emerald Mountain: sustained humidity and storm wind — typical of the River Region.

- Measure the reveal all the way aroundThe gap pattern between the leaves and around the frame tells us exactly what has moved and in which direction.
- Check both leaves independentlyOne door usually causes the problem, and treating both the same way makes it worse. Openings here get assessed for drainage as well as alignment, since summer storms find any weakness at the sill.
- Correct the hinges before the hardwareMultipoint locks and flush bolts cannot be adjusted into working if the door is sitting in the wrong place.
- Rebuild the seal at the meeting stileAstragal and weatherstrip get replaced together, because that centre joint is where the draft and the water come through.
- Set the locking hardwareKeepers adjusted so the shootbolts engage top and bottom with the handle lifting smoothly and no forcing.
- Check it seals along its lengthWe look for daylight and feel for draft down the full height of the meeting stile, not just at eye level.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of french door repair in Emerald Mountain
We would rather tell you what drives the price than quote a number that turns out to be wrong once we see the door. On a french door repair job in Emerald Mountain, the main variables are these:
- multipoint lock repair versus full gearbox replacement
- interior versus exterior pairs, since exterior work includes weatherproofing
- astragal, weatherstrip and threshold replacement
- whether one leaf or both need re-hanging
- glass replacement in individual lites
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Emerald Mountain.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895French door repair in Emerald Mountain: questions we get asked
Why will my multipoint lock not throw anymore?
The door has moved, so the lock points no longer line up with their keepers in the frame. Forcing the handle in that state is how the gearbox breaks, so it is worth correcting the alignment before something expensive fails.
My French doors rub in the middle. Is that because the wood swelled?
Usually not. Nine times out of ten it is hinge sag on one leaf, and the giveaway is that the rub is worse at one end of the joint than the other. Real swelling affects the whole edge evenly and comes and goes with the season.
The inactive door keeps moving when I close the active one. Why?
The flush bolts at the top and bottom of the inactive leaf have failed or are no longer reaching their keepers. Both need to be solidly engaged or the whole pair loses its reference point.
The handle on my French door spins without doing anything. What broke?
The multipoint gearbox or the drive connection inside the door. That is a replacement part matched to the specific system, and it is worth identifying the manufacturer before ordering.
Are French doors less secure than a single door?
They can be, because there are two leaves and a joint in the middle. Reinforced strikes, solid flush bolts and long fasteners into the framing make a big difference and are inexpensive.
How do I stop water coming in under my French doors?
Usually the threshold seal and the sill pan. A pair of exterior French doors has a hard job at the bottom of the meeting stile, and in Elmore County storms that is where water finds its way in.
